In the pantheon of fashion legends, Jean Paul Gaultier stands as a towering figure, a creative genius whose influence transcends mere trends.
For over five decades, his audacious designs and irreverent spirit have captivated the imagination of fashion enthusiasts worldwide, earning him a place among the industry’s most revered icons. With the announcement of Gaultier’s return to the fashion spotlight, anticipation reaches a fever pitch. But this is no ordinary comeback. Gaultier’s eponymous brand unveils a groundbreaking concept: an annual collaboration with a visionary designer to breathe new life into the Gaultier universe. And leading this revolutionary charge is none other than Chitose Abe, the trailblazing talent behind Sacai.
In the realm of fashion, Chitose Abe’s name is synonymous with innovation and daring creativity. As the founder and creative mind behind Sacai, Abe has garnered acclaim for her distinctive aesthetic, blending disparate elements with seamless precision to create garments that defy convention and redefine the boundaries of style.
With reverence for Gaultier’s storied legacy and a keen appreciation for her own cultural heritage, Abe embarks on a journey to pay homage to the enfant terrible of fashion. Drawing inspiration from Gaultier’s rebellious spirit and French savoir-faire, she infuses her Fall/Winter 2021 Haute Couture collection with a captivating blend of Japanese sensibility and avant-garde flair.
As the collection unfolds, Abe’s reinterpretation of Gaultier’s iconic motifs takes center stage. Classic French silhouettes are deconstructed and reconstructed with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in garments that are at once familiar and entirely new. The legendary cone bra, famously worn by Madonna, is transformed into a sculptural masterpiece, while bomber jackets and coats are reimagined as ethereal dresses and corsets.
Abe’s exploration of innovative materials and cutting-edge techniques breathes new life into Gaultier’s designs, pushing the boundaries of traditional haute couture. Knitted and denim garments undergo a radical transformation, their oversized cuts and avant-garde silhouettes challenging conventional notions of luxury and elegance.
Collaborating with esteemed shoe designer Pierre Hardy, Abe introduces a stunning array of footwear that complements her avant-garde designs. From boots adorned with exposed seams to thigh-high creations inspired by Gaultier’s iconic corsets, each piece is a testament to the seamless synergy between craftsmanship and artistry.
Dr. Woo’s intricate calligraphies and patterns infuse the collection with an otherworldly beauty, elevating it to the realm of wearable art. Each brushstroke tells a story, weaving together elements of tradition and modernity in a mesmerizing tapestry of cultural exchange. But the impact of Gaultier’s legacy extends far beyond the confines of the runway. In a nod to his indelible influence, the collection is accompanied by a curated selection of ready-to-wear garments, a visionary collaboration with Nike, and the revival of the iconic fragrance, “Smells Like Punk Spirit.”
Together, these elements herald a new era for Jean Paul Gaultier, one defined by collaboration, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of convention. With Chitose Abe at the helm, Gaultier’s legacy is not only preserved but elevated to new heights of artistic expression and creative exploration. Through this groundbreaking collaboration, Gaultier’s legacy is not merely preserved; it is rejuvenated, invigorated by the fresh perspectives and boundless creativity of Chitose Abe and her collaborators. Each garment, each accessory, is a testament to the transformative power of fashion to inspire, provoke, and challenge the status quo.
Moreover, Abe’s appointment as the inaugural guest creator of the Gaultier universe signals a profound shift towards inclusivity and diversity within the fashion realm. By embracing a diverse array of talents and perspectives, the brand transcends the confines of tradition and embraces the rich tapestry of global culture.
“Haute couture is like an orchestra whose conductor is Balenciaga. We other couturiers are the musicians and we follow the direction he gives.” – Jean Paul Gaultier
Through this collaborative endeavor, Gaultier blurs the boundaries between East and West, tradition and modernity, creating a cultural dialogue that resonates with audiences around the world. The result is a collection that is as diverse and multifaceted as the global community it seeks to represent.
In embracing collaboration, Gaultier redefines the traditional fashion house model, transforming it into a dynamic platform for creative exchange and innovation. By harnessing the collective genius of diverse talents, the brand demonstrates the transformative power of collaboration to inspire and elevate. Gaultier’s influence extends far beyond the realm of fashion, shaping popular culture and inspiring generations of artists, musicians, and designers. From his iconic cone bra to his groundbreaking fragrance campaigns, his imprint on the cultural landscape is indelible and enduring.
Through his bold and eclectic designs, Gaultier has woven a cultural tapestry that reflects the diverse and ever-evolving landscape of contemporary society. His work celebrates the beauty of individuality and the power of self-expression, serving as a beacon of inclusivity and acceptance.
Today, as the fashion industry grapples with rapid change and shifting trends, Gaultier’s legacy continues to resonate, serving as a guiding light for future generations of designers. His fearless approach to creativity and unapologetic embrace of diversity remain as relevant now as ever before. Gaultier’s work blurs the boundaries between fashion and art, challenging conventional notions of beauty and aesthetic expression. His garments are not merely clothes but wearable sculptures, each piece a testament to the transformative power of artistic vision.
With his irreverent approach to haute couture, Gaultier has redefined the notion of luxury, making it more accessible and inclusive. His willingness to push boundaries and challenge conventions has paved the way for a new era of creativity and innovation in the world of high fashion. As Gaultier himself once declared, “Once I’m in something, that becomes my world.” Now, thanks to Chitose Abe’s transcendent vision, that world expands ever further, beckoning us to embark on a journey where imagination knows no bounds, and creativity reigns supreme. In this renaissance of iconoclasm, the spirit of Gaultier lives on, immortalized in every stitch, every brushstroke, and every heartbeat of a fashion revolution reborn.
Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaboration with Chitose Abe marks a new chapter in the history of fashion, one defined by innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of creativity. Their partnership serves as a testament to the enduring power of artistic vision and the transformative potential of fashion to inspire and uplift.
As the fashion industry continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: the legacy of Jean Paul Gaultier will endure, inspiring future generations of designers to embrace creativity, individuality, and the transformative power of fashion. Theirs is a journey of endless possibility, a testament to the enduring legacy of one of fashion’s true visionaries.

Kelly: What is something about yourself that most people would be surprised to learn?
Aime: People are usually surprised when they find out that I am French. I have lost a lot of my accent and I almost exclusively speak English at home, so if you don’t know me that might surprise you.
Or maybe I don’t drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs. That would probably surprise a lot of people.
Kelly: Can you tell us about a project you are currently working on and
what do you hope to achieve with it?
Aime: Right now I am working on the live show. It’s a continual work in progress, but right now I am making adjustments based on what I learn from the festivals that I’m doing. Every show is an opportunity to improve. I want to have a show that feels amazing to perform and to experience. I want the energy to be effortless, powerful, and cathartic. I want the show to carry you, lift you, and release something in you. So I’m working on that.
Kelly: What would be your dream project or collaboration?
Aime: I would love to make an album in a special place, like a villa in a warm climate. I would like to have the experience of completely immersing in the creative work for a while, isolated from everything else. Gathering the right instruments, tools, and people to be around and bring the right energy. That would be a luxury.
Kelly: How do you navigate the intersection of your public persona and your private life, and what boundaries do you set?
Aime: I think I’m starting to reach the point where I do have to set some kind of boundary. Before I was making the effort to address everything on a personal level, respond to all the messages, etc. I knew at some point that would become difficult. I do feel guilty but it’s just not possible for it to stay the same. So I think I have become more picky about what I put my energy into. For example, some fans give me a lot, a lot of love and I know they truly connect to me and my music. For them, I will always be there. But more and more some people just want something from me, and they don’t make the effort to know me. They just see that I have some kind of spotlight on me sometimes so they try to get something from me. I have to cut myself off from that kind of energy, it is depressing and empty.
” I just have to believe my intuition. It’s very scary in the industry where everything is built to make you believe that you can’t do it your way, that you have to do things the “right” way or you will fail, be punished, or be abandoned.”

Kelly: If you could have any historical figure over for dinner, who would it be and what would you serve?
Aime: I would bring back Salvador Dalí and I would serve lobster.
Kelly: If you could only have one app on your phone, what would it be?
Aime: Probably WhatsApp. Or Instagram.
Kelly: How do you balance the pressure to be perfect with the need to take
risks and try new things?
Aime: That’s a real challenge. But I don’t think about it too much. I know that the answer is always in the action. You can’t try too hard to do anything. Just do the work, don’t be lazy. Do it well, take it as far as you can. And let go if it’s time. It’s something you learn over and over again. That’s just the work of an artist I think.
Kelly: What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing your industry today, and how do you think it can be addressed?
Aime: The lack of attention span. The sheer amount of content and high stimulation of everyday life today is not conducive to people connecting to music and artists. While the advantage of today might be the huge amount of exposure, what is lacking is the ability for people to take the time to understand the depth of an artist. I think people are more likely to feel superficially stimulated by a song and enjoy it for a very short amount of time before skipping to the next thing, rather than discovering an artist and diving into their universe. I think it is still something that humans need. So there is this lack of connection, deep connection to art. I think reaching the hearts of people is more difficult today. Everyone is too busy, overstimulated, or apathetic. I think it’s a greater question of where we are headed as a culture. We are still physical beings. We have to make our relationship with technology symbiotic, not destructive. I think there is still a balance to find that will be more healthy.
Kelly: How do you maintain authenticity and stay true to yourself in an industry that can often be superficial and image-driven?
Aime: Always bring it back to the music. That is the center of it all. The songs. The melodies, the lyrics. As long as those are true then I am not worried about losing myself, that keeps me grounded in authenticity.
Kelly: Can you describe a moment when you had to take a leap of faith and
pursue a new path or direction in your career?
Aime: I’ve had to quit working with some people. That is always scary because when you work with someone for a long time you are used to that and you feel comfortable in the familiarity. But sometimes you have to change things. So for me, those kinds of moments feel like a leap of faith, and I just have to believe my intuition. It’s very scary in the industry where everything is built to make you believe that you can’t do it your way, that you have to do things the “right” way or you will fail, be punished, or be abandoned.
Kelly: How do you stay motivated and inspired to continue to create and innovate in your work, despite challenges and obstacles?
Aime: It’s all there is to do in this life for me. I don’t think I could ever give up, what would I do?
The challenges and the obstacles are part of the experience. They make me strong. I think I chose this path because I wanted to grow. Sometimes I feel like giving up. But I think that feeling is towards very specific things- giving up on certain aspects of the industry, for example. I could imagine someday choosing a more underground path. I come from that, so it would feel less challenging I think. The industry is very uncomfortable, but at the same time, I like the competition with myself in this very harsh context.
Kelly: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice at the beginning of your career, what would it be?
Aime: It’s strange because anything I can think of that I would do differently today is exactly what led me to be here now. So it’s hard to answer.
